Ambient music, dim theatrical lighting, a few vintage books (props) to browse, and absolutely no required small talk. YES, you can chill on the stage!
We’re trying something new at PaperMap.
We’re turning the theater into a quiet reading space filled with warm theatrical light, ambient music, old furniture, and a bunch of people happily getting lost in their own books.
There’s no assigned reading, no book discussion, and no introductions. Just bring something you want to read, find a comfortable spot, and settle in.
PaperMap also has a collection of vintage books you’re welcome to browse while you’re here, though we highly recommend bringing your own. Computers/phones/e-readers are ok too, but we don’t have WiFi, so make plans if you need to connect to the world outside our cozy walls.
Stay for the whole three hours, or quietly come and go as you need to. Coffee, tea, and small snacks are welcome to be brought in as well. Make yourself at home!

Dark Thanksgiving weekend
Christmas Eve, 1977. A snowstorm, a bed & breakfast, a family gathered together, and a television that suddenly stops cooperating.
What happens next turns a familiar Christmas story into something much more personal.
A Paper Map Christmas Carol is PaperMap’s warm, playful reimagining of Dickens’ classic, told by a family using whatever they can find: chairs, blankets, string lights, old records, a paper map, and a great deal of imagination.
This is not a dark and dreary Christmas Carol. There are ghosts, of course, and the heart of Dickens is still very much here, but so are laughter, music, family chaos, familiar carols, and the cozy magic of people making something together.
Set against the glow of Christmas in 1977, it’s a funny and heartfelt holiday story about the people we miss, the traditions we pass along, and finding our way back to one another.

It all begins with a cozy theatrical space focused on safety. Cast members learn, perform scenes, ask questions, try ideas, (sometimes) miss the mark, and try again. 100% support is provided.
Rehearsal happens in person, in the same room, with the same cast. Phones stay away. Attention stays with the work and with one another. With this, confidence grows. Relationships form. And a great show takes shape.

Roles are auditioned and cast thoughtfully, with care for balance, learning, and the overall experience. Cast sizes are intentionally limited so each performer is supported and challenged.
Cast members learn how individual choices shape the group and the story. They learn responsibility, collaboration, and what it means to show up for others. By the time performances begin, the cast has built something unique together and shares the experience of presenting it as an ensemble.
This feels like a great drama club, with intention, structure, and follow-through.

Casts rehearse together over several weeks, building toward a fully staged production. Costumes, lighting, sound, and design elements are explored as part of the rehearsal process, not added at the last minute.
